Whether you are likely to be driving abroad for the first time or you are an established continental driver, Driving Abroad is the one book that deserves the title of ‘The Continental Motorist's Bible’.
There is an abundance of useful information that the first timer will want to read well before departing for foreign shores and certainly during the planning stage of the journey.
The experienced 'right hander' will also find the contents to be extremely beneficial. As author of this website I am probably one of the most enlightened, knowledgeable and keenly interested in driving abroad, yet there is much advice and information included in this book that augments previous knowledge.

Haynes Publishing has a reputation for precise, accurate information in their publications and Driving Abroad is no exception. Of course, printed material (and websites for that matter) are only as accurate as the date they were published. In this respect Driving Abroad (first published only a few months ago) wins hands down in any contest with official government publications that can be years out of date.
An example of Haynes ability to convey precise information (and incidentally a method I use to determine any published documents credibility) is shown on page 106 'Strictly speaking, in France you are permitted to use hazard warning lights instead of a triangle, but if your hazards are damaged in an accident then you are breaking the law if you don't display a triangle'. Most similar publications simply inform the reader that a warning triangle is compulsory, in Driving Abroad you get the facts.

The section, Driving abroad, is essentially an introduction to the book.

On the road is more in-depth and introduces the reader to a couple of dozen subjects where obvious differences are to be found while driving abroad.

Road hazards details instances where we would normally deal with a situation automatically in the UK but when abroad extra care should be taken.

Rules and regulations Not a list of rules and regulations (which can be found towards the rear of the book) but general information on the differences you may encounter. Covers items ranging from carrying bicycles to on-the-spot fines.

Extreme conditions Everything from driving in snow to desert driving, and from rain and floods to driving in the Third World.

Documents and insurance All required documents are detailed in this section. You will also find useful subjects such as; pet travel, bail bonds, vignettes and IDP's

Hiring a car A very useful section on hiring transport at your destination including motorhomes and motorcycles.

In an emergency Theft, breakdowns, accidents and fire are all covered including advice on how to avoid crime and helping casualties.

Driving in Western Europe etc. The last part of the book is divided into seven sections and describes each country or continent in more detail. It is in these sections that you will find a fact file for most countries.
