HazLight Micro
Astucia Traffic Management, a UK company with vast experience in intelligent road markings, has recently introduced this very useful kit for the motorist, the HazLight Micro.
Intended for use in emergencies such as a breakdown or accident, the set of three studs should be placed between your vehicle and the approaching traffic in a similar fashion to traffic cones where one lane of a road is closed.

Each waterproof light unit or 'stud' contains three ultra-bright Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) that can be seen up to 1 km away and are powered by Ni-MH batteries that can be re-charged in the car. Each stud flashes independently to the others and will function without re-charging for up to 24 hours.
The studs are stored in a very robust and compact storage case, which also holds the charge lead and acts as a charging rack. On the rear of the case is a plasticized instruction label, which gives information on placement and charging.

The studs are automatically activated once removed from the case and also turn off when replaced. Due to the design of the case, they can be replaced in any position and even if not replaced correctly, closing of the lid pushes them home.
Astucia informed us that the studs are very stable and robust in use but this didn't stop us from doing our own tests.
We subjected a stud to the weight of a Range Rover driving over it at varying speeds. The stud was not marked, worked faultlessly and most surprising of all, did not flip up but remained in position in the roadway.
Feeling somewhat elated by the results of this test we decided to drive over the case as well which suffered nothing more than one or two scratches.

To re-charge the studs, the included charge lead is removed from the case and plugged into the side socket; the standard, fused cigar lighter plug is then connected to the car enabling the studs to be fully recharged.
An initial charge takes 14 hours but from then on they only need charging for the same amount of time as they have been used e.g. 2 hours use, 2 hours charge.

The compact size of the kit (250mm x 120mm x 28mm) means it can be kept in a corner of the car boot and can be instantly deployed should the need arise.
If you are considering driving abroad however, the standard emergency triangle will still be a requirement in the majority of European countries.

There are many police forces throughout the UK, Europe and beyond already using HazLight Intelligent Road Studs and all pay tribute to the HazLight's ability to greatly reduce the likelihood of collision following a breakdown.
Although we have been unable to test the HazLight kit in adverse weather conditions, I am sure that in fog, mist or rain, they would prove to be far superior in performance compared with a standard emergency triangle.

This set from Astucia is undoubtedly well worth having as part of your breakdown kit.
