Without doubt the first thing
that most people think of when considering what to take
on a driving trip abroad, is a warning triangle. And
as our pages testify, in the majority of European countries
it is a legal requirement so the question is not 'Should
I take one?' but rather 'Which one should I take?'

In a dozen years of driving abroad
I have used a warning triangle in haste on only two
occasions. My original triangle was a cheap version
purchased at a local car shop on the eve of our very
first venture into Continental Europe. It was extremely
bulky, very heavy and on the second occasion of it
seeing daylight, promptly snapped at one of the corner
hinges. The result was a very tense half-hour changing
a tyre at the side of a road while afforded no protection
whatsoever from a pile of broken plastic. Furthermore,
I suffered a pinched finger from the guillotine action
of the legs as I folded it away.

|
On returning home I set out to replace this piece
of junk with one that could serve its purpose without
failing.
I settled on the excellent Hella warning triangle
seen here which not only came at a very competitive
price but was also half the size, half the weight
and due to its clever design, was very unlikely to
remove a finger.

The triangle comes in the
usual red plastic case, which incorporates instructions
on where to place it on the roadway in relation to the
vehicle. It also has recesses at either end so that
it can be opened easily with wet or cold hands. |
|
As I have already mentioned, this triangle is very
compact and once removed from the case is easily
transformed into a full size, type-approved warning
triangle.
|
 |
 |
Two simple operations and the triangle is ready for
use.
Pull up the two triangle sides and clip together,
then swing out the four metal legs.
|
|
The precision-built, ultra-effective reflectors are
efficient both day and night.
|
|
|
| When positioned at the roadside,
the sturdy four-point base has a large footprint and
keeps the triangle in place preventing movement caused
by wind or passing trucks. |
