The Mag-Lite® has to be
one of the best-known torches amongst camping, emergency
services and military personnel. The AA model featured
here is the one that I find best suited to general use
while camping.
Mag-Lite® produce other models ranging from the
Solitaire® which takes just one AAA size battery
up to the 6-D cell monster that also comes in a rechargeable
version.
As with all the other models, the AA version is made
from high-strength aluminium alloy, which is anodised
for extra protection. The torch is water and shock
resistant and just for good measure a spare bulb is
incorporated into the base.
A simple twist of the business end turns the torch
on and further rotation adjusts the beam from wide-angle
to spot.
Totally removing the head allows for replacement of
the bulb or placing the head at the other end of the
torch gives the user an electronic candle. If you
want 'hands free operation' for reading or general
lighting, simply remove the head and hang the torch
up by an attached strap.
At less than six inches in length and under 4oz in
weight it is an easy torch to carry about the campsite.
There are numerous accessories available including
coloured lenses, belt holsters (leather and canvas)
and various clips.
A couple of points worth mentioning
here is that care must be taken not to handle the bulb
envelope (glass) with bare fingers, any grease or sweat
will get burnt onto the glass and shorten the life of
the bulb.
I have also found that a small amount of Vaseline applied
to the head thread and seal will give a much smoother
operation (again keep it clear of the bulb).
